BT Sport Uses 5G To Power Social Viewing And AR Stats On Mobile
BT is not just one of the U.K.’s leading sports broadcasters, it’s also the country’s largest broadband and mobile network. This means it is in a unique position to create entirely new sports viewing experiences on mobile devices.
The latest innovation is ‘Match Day Experience’, a new set of 5G-enabled features for the BT Sport mobile application that attempt to bring fans closer to soccer, rugby and other sports at a time when they are physically unable to be in the stands due to Coronavirus-related social distancing restrictions.
The headline addition is 'Watch Together', which allows multiple fans to watch the same sporting event at the same time. The action is displayed alongside feeds from participants' cameras, so everyone can see each other's reactions.

BT Sport has also added ‘pinch and zoom’ functionality to its 360-degree video programming so fans can see anywhere inside the stadium, compensating for the inability to be physically present at the venue.
There are also several Augmented Reality (AR) innovations that aim to enhance the second screen experience. Customers can view match statistics such as line-ups, in-game stats and formations on any surface via their phone's camera, while Manager Mode lets customers add real-time graphics such as a mini-map, player names and shot traces to the broadcast.
Finally, Stadium Experience is an AR feature that gives fans a behind-the-scenes look at some of the most famous soccer and sporting venues, including locker rooms and trophy cabinets.
Former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand, who now works as a pundit on BT Sport says he thinks the new features will transform the viewing experience.
“You get new insights … the ability to pinch and zoom and focus on a particular element of the game is phenomenal,” he explains.
He adds that the data elements are also significant because they give views the same level of detail that pundits receive: “Having data is huge as it gives us more information at our fingertips and enhances what we can give the viewers.
Match Day Experience has a secondary ambition of showcasing BT’s EE 5G mobile network and the ability of next-generation mobile connectivity to transform entertainment and sports applications. It sees sport as a use case that can immediately resonate with customers.
Other broadcasters have updated their digital services with enhanced features and social elements since the return of sports after the Coronavirus-enforced suspension, but BT’s offering is one of the most advanced seen to date.
While many of these features are usable on a 4G network, the additional speeds, capacity and low-latency of 5G networks inevitably mean a superior experience – something EE is keen to stress now that the first 5G-compatible iPhone 12 has been launched by Apple.
“It's a game-changer,” adds Marc Allera, BT Consumer CEO. “When you combine EE 5G with the Matchday Experience of the BT Sport app, combined with the capability of the iPhone. It’s going to be the most technically advanced experience fans have ever had.”
Analysts predict the first time many people will interact with a 5G network will be through sport, initially at home, and 91% of the world's leading operators had planned to trial 5G at a sporting venue before the pandemic.
