LaLiga is one of the most popular sports leagues in the world and also one of the most progressive when it comes to its approach to technology innovation and new business models, including its tackling of online piracy.
Enhancing the fan viewing experience has also been high on LaLiga’s agenda in the digital age and its latest experiment will see it run a pilot designed to test the fans appetite for more social viewing.
Working together with software provider Sceenic, LaLiga will inetgarte the vendor’s ‘Watch Together’ solution into its OTT platform. This will keep the social interaction within the same platform, enabling a communal co-viewing experience for those watching a particular game.
If successful, Watch Together will be an available feature for LaLiga Sports TV users, allowing fans to stream their favourite games, react and comment in real-time with friends, helping LaLiga build brand loyalty.
With more than 3.3 billion mobile internet users worldwide, LaLiga it will be interesting to see how the partners overcome the latency issue that inevitably comes with internet video streaming, especially critical for real-time interactive applications such as this one.
Minerva Santana, Director of Innovation & Global Development at LaLiga, says that in order to remain leaders they need to be able to anticipate “the new models of fan engagement and forms of audio-visual content consumption” that are supported by new technologies.
Sceenic has been working with cable operators, broadcasters and telcos, and claims companies around the world are now implementing its Watch Together solution.
